So I just found this cool program called Mixed-In-Key. It will analyze all your music and tell you what key its in so you can mix you mixes better by selecting songs that are of the same key. Its pretty cool. It works on the principle of “Harmonic Mixing.”

From their website:

Bottom line, harmonic mixing eliminates key clashes. When you mix harmonically, your vocals, melodies and basslines will all be in key (harmony). Harmonic mixing helps you achieve a ‘live mash-up’ effect and encourages creativity. You’ll discover unusual song mixing combinations, like The Beatles vs. Jay-Z, or you can simply enjoy flawless DJ mixing, like Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk and Sasha.

With harmonic mixing, it’s essential to know the key of every song you play. Mixed In Key software scans your entire music collection (MP3s and WAVs) to make this easy. When scanning is done, Mixed In Key displays your results in the Camelot Easymix notation (e.g. 4A, 6B) or Flat/Sharp notation (e.g. F minor, B-flat minor).

Mixed In Key is easy to use. Simply add your music to the Analyze Songs window, click Start Processing and Mixed In Key will show you which songs mix together without a key clash. Using the results will give you a harmonic mix every time.

Our software works perfectly with all CD decks, Ableton Live, Traktor, Torq, and all other mixing software and hardware. You can use your current DJ equipment with Mixed In Key.

Ive got a Powerbook G4 with 1gb or RAM and it took about 5 hours to analyze 560 mp3 files. Mixed-In-Key is available for both Mac OS X 10.4+ and Windows 2000, XP and Vista (if your unfortunate enough to own a Windows PC).

Its not free, it cost $58, but its worth it. Check out their website (click the link above) and watch the demo, youll be sold in a minute once you see it in action. However, it did take quite a while to analyze my files. But another cool thing that it does is that it will write the key information to the ID3 tag of the file so you wont forget your songs key. And it also lets you choose how and where it writes the key information.

Welcome to my latest mix. This one is a little different than the others, its longer and has more variety of music. Its got a little of everything, even a few classic cover song remixes! This mix covers everything from super mellow progressive house to hard electro house at the end and everything in between in the middle. The first half is Progressive House and is pretty mellow. After a trip to mellowville on the Progressive Express we catch the Disco train to Electro Town! I tried to mix in a lot of different music to make it a little different than what Ive been doing lately. The last song cuts off at the first break, I had to go.

This is a total experiment (thus the “x” after the mix number). I was bored and decided to play around with seeing how many tracks I could play in 30 minutes. This is an experiment in cuts and mixes. Some parts work, some parts dont. Im not going to post a playlist because I dont think its worth it because the mix isnt that great. However, if there is something you hear that you want to know the name of if you ask Ill tell you.

Okie Dokie here we go again. Been really busy, sorry I havent updated the site in long time. This mix is kind of experimental. I tried to cut more and mix shorter and more often. Its hard electro mostly with some other stuff thrown in for shits and giggles.

This mix starts off very electro and kind of chills down to some mellow Progressive House at the end. One of my new favorites tracks is in this mix Let’s Take Drugs. The sample editing on that track is absolutely amazing (stay tuned for a full review).

Comment: Kick, snare, hat, clap, kick, snare, hat, clap, its a classic right from the start. The first minute is nothing but the beat. Just before the minute mark it breaks into a vocal and electro buildup. The break ends with a chunky electro bass that rides the kick, snare, hat, clap, with an occasional male echo vocal. The 2:45 mark is the first time we get anything but bass, beat and vocals. A funky space synth stab echos in the background as a new distorted electro bass starts to buildup underneath. The main break comes at 3:30 and its all electro bass with a distorted kick and the vocal hooks. The second half of the track after the break continues like the first with the electro bass now being the new slightly distorted bass we heard just before th break. Right before the end the original electro bass sound comes back and continues till the last 0:45 seconds when it drops out and its just kick, snare, hat, clap, kick, snare, hat, clap till the end when it ends with a final vocal hook that fades out.

Comment: It starts out with a solid deep kick drum and soon adds a hi-hat and a synth-blip and a scratch. At exactly 1:00 the intro breaks into a short build up thats driven by the synth-blip and a electro bass stab. After the break we get the essence of this track, a hard beat, with a deep electro bass line and the synth-blip with a male vocal hook over the top of that. There is a second break at 2:32 and its similar to the first but about half as long. After the second break the bass line changes. It gets more electro and becomes harder and a more important element of the track. There are a lot of breaks in this track, there is a 3rd one at 3:36 that last about 0:30 seconds and its also similar to the previous two breaks. The rest of the track is the same as the previous, hard electro over hard kicks with hats and synth-blips and the ever present male vocal hook.
